Thixotropic agent for converting liquid Silicone into a brush material

Zhermack THIXO additive is an auxiliary product for addition of RTV2 silicone. His role is to increase the thixotropic character of Silicone, so that the material flows less and can be applied more controlled by brushing or spatulars.

The product is useful when making the mould by classic casting is not practical, for example on vertical surfaces, fixed patterns, large objects or geometry where the operator wants to build the mould in layers.

Recommended dosage for addition silicone

According to the technical documentation Zhermack, the recommended dosage is:

1% up to a maximum of 3% by weight.

AGENT THIXO must be added to Same percentage both in BASE and CATALYST.

Example: if a 2% dose is chosen, add 2% THIXO agent in BASE and 2% THIXO agent in CATALYST.

Do not exceed 3% weight.

Correct method of use

Zhermack recommended procedure is as follows:

1. Shake the bottle of Agent THIXO well before use.
2. Add the percentage chosen by Agent THIXO to the component BASE.
3. Mix BASE + THIXO for approximately 60 seconds.
4. Add the same percentage of Agent THIXO to the component CATALYST.
5. Mix CATALYST + THIXO for approximately 60 seconds.
6. Then weigh equal amounts of BASE and CATALYST, respecting the ratio 1: 1 weight.
7. Mix the two components together for approximately 60 seconds.
8. Apply silicone according to the chosen work process.

Practical applications

The THIXO agent is particularly useful in the process of making the moulds where a less fluid silicone is needed, for example:

• Manufacture from materials of any heading, except that of the product;
• application on vertical surfaces;
• application on tilted surfaces;
• Gloves for large objects;
• restoration and reproduction when the model cannot be moved or positioned for casting;
• industrial mould-making where better silicone flow control is required.

By increasing the viscosity of Silicone, the THIXO agent allows the application of the material in layers on the model. This method can be useful for the manufacture of thin glove moulds.
